Iain Murray (author)
Iain Hamish Murray (born 19 April 1931) is a British pastor and author who co-founded the Reformed publishing house, the Banner of Truth Trust. Early life Iain Murray was educated in the Isle of Man at King William's College. He was converted in 1949. In the summer of 1950 he was commissioned in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) rifle regiment of the British Army, serving in Singapore and Malaya in the suppression of the communist insurgency known as the "Malayan Emergency". He transferred to the Army reserve in 1955 and resigned his commission the following year. After his military service, Murray studied Philosophy and History at the University of Durham, graduating with a BA in 1954. In 1955 he married Jean Ann Walters and became assistant minister at St. John's Free Church, Summertown, Oxford. George Iain Murray, 10th Duke of Atholl, DL (19 June 1931 – 27 February 1996), known as ''Wee Iain'', was a Scottish peer and landowner. Background and education Murray was the only surviving child of Lieutenant-Colonel George Anthony Murray (1907–1945), who was killed in action in the Second World War, and the Honourable Angela Pearson (1910–1981), daughter of The 2nd Viscount Cowdray. He was a great-grandson of Sir George Murray, grandson of the Right Reverend George Murray, son of the Right Reverend Lord George Murray, second son of The 3rd Duke of Atholl, who in turn was eldest son of renowned Scottish Jacobite Lord George Murray. Through his American great-grandfather, Brigadier General Daniel M. Frost of the Confederate States Army, he was a descendant of the Winthrop family and a distant cousin to former Secretary of State John Kerry. Iain Murray AM (born 14 April 1958 in Sydney) is an Australian sailor and yacht designer Murray is known for his success in the 18 ft skiff class, appearances in 12-Metre Class yachts in the 1983 and 1987 America's Cup regattas, innovation in yacht design, management of the 2013 and 2017 America's Cup and global SailGP and for winning a second World Championship in the Etchells class 35 years after the first. Sailing career Murray started sailing in Flying Ant class dinghies at the age of nine. His first major event win was at the 1973 Australian Cherub Championships at the age of fourteen in a boat he had designed and built himself at the age of twelve. He won regattas including 6 consecutive 18 foot skiff World Championships, leading to his appearances in 12-Metre Class yachts in the America's Cup regattas, and then for his long-standing involvement with the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
